Calgary Centennials Return For One Game

Earlier this year, the Calgary Hitmen announced they'd be paying tribute to the city's junior and alternative major league hockey history throughout the season. The Corral Series (referring to the old Calgary arena prior to the Saddledome) lasts from February 1st-6th. The first of these games will go back to the early 70s with the Calgary Centennials.

The Centennials were originally founded in 1966, given the name as part of Canada's 100th birthday came just after the season. The team would end up making it to the 1971 Memorial Cup, winning 3 WCHL Western division championships and the 1973-74 WCHL finalists. NHLers who came from the Centennials include Bob Nystrom, 6 games with Lanny McDonald, John Davidson, Jimmy Watson, and Mike Rogers.

The team is fondly remembered in Calgary as being the best team in the city before the Flames or Cowboys would bring major league hockey to the city. The team would end up relocating to Billings, Montana to become the ill fated Billings Bighorns and with stops in Nanaimo and New Westminster, the team is currently the Tri City Americans. That being said the Centennials will always be Calgary's team.

As you can see from the GROOVY game program above, the jerseys were Blackhawks copies with red pants, and a black and red C wrapped around the '67 symbol used during the Canadian Centennial celebrations.

Today, the team is bringing back these exact jerseys.

Here we see two Centennials alumni, the aforementioned Mike Rogers and former line mate Jerry Holland rocking the CCM Quiklite versions of this jersey. As you can see it is a direct copy, minus the inclusion of the CCM, WHL logos, and the new Quiklite collar system.

Don't worry, the current players are getting in on the vintage festivities as well, with their own vintage lineup photos featuring the typical shades and staches of the time along with vintage sticks and sweet looking Koho gloves.
