Friday: Stadium Series Surprise

Hey y'all, and welcome to another Friday post here at HJC.  As we covered in a news piece earlier today, the logos for the 2019 Stadium Series have been released, and they offer a good idea as to what the event is gonna look like.

Both logos are stripped down, simplified versions of the teams' primary logos, with all white being eliminated from them.  To me, it seems to confirm that this will be an orange-on-black matchup, as the Flyers' logo seems to be designed for orange and the Pens' looks like it'd be a great match for black.  While I know this is essentially a home and away series, I'm really hoping that this year's matchup won't feature recolored versions of last year's templates.  It just seems like a lazy option to me, and I would love to see a little more creativity.

In voting news, we have the regular COTW vote for December 7-13, as well as the 2019 All Star Redesign Competition vote, with both polls closing Friday at noon EST.

Now on to today's concepts!

Adam G.- New York Rangers

Our first concept of the day is Adam G.'s design for my beloved Blueshirts.  As a Rangers fan, I am a huge proponent of sticking to their iconic design, and I tend to be resistant to change.  That being said, I like some of the ideas in this design.  Sticking with the striping design used from '78-'97, Adam creates a chest stripe that I think might work with the Rangers logo.  While I see where Adam was going with the angled cutoff of the chest stripe, I don't think it works with a logo that doesn't lean with it.  The alternate is a bit off the wall, but I actually really like it.  The angled sash-style striping reminiscent of the logo looks really good, and I think the white numbers on the back actually work pretty well.  Final verdict: some novel design ideas, but nothing I would like to see take the place of the regular uniforms.  There's just something wrong about Rangers primaries without the diagonal wordmark.  7/10

Adam G.- Vancouver Canucks

We follow up Adam's Rangers design with one for the Canucks.  This design seems to take its cues from their pre-Edge color scheme, but adds a more traditional striping pattern.  I like the consistency of the striping across the set, with only a minor color swap on the alt to keep with the theme.  The contrasting cuffs on the away do a great job of helping the color balance, and the font choice is solid.  The use of Millionaires maroon for the alternate is a great nod to the past, but I cannot stand the recolored Johnny V logo on the shoulder.  Final verdict: a solid design for the Canucks, but it also serves to remind me that this was their weakest color scheme.  7.5/10

Lucas D.- Cleveland Browns

Our final concept of the day is Lucas D.'s NFL crossover design for the Cleveland Browns.  I really like the simple striping design inspired by the Browns' helmets, it looks good across the set.  The contrasting cuffs do a great job of bringing more brown to the away, and logo and font choices are solid as well.  My only detraction is that the arm striping looks a little low on the 2D template, but it was fixed on the 3D, so it's not as much of an issue.  Final verdict: a solid design for the Browns that's simple enough for a storied franchise like Cleveland.  8.5/10 and my COTW NOMINEE!!!!!

That's all for me this week, see y'all next Friday!
