Thursday: Karlsson Watch

Back to my usual day. Happy Thursday, ladies and gents.

In an effort not to puff up Ryan's chest anymore than it already is and to not piss off Phil more than he already is, I'll refrain from commenting on the Tavares move any more than to say: Welcome home, Johnny.

Perhaps the most exiting non-Tavares news rests on the shoulders of Pierre Dorion with Karlsson-watch steaming forward in full force as the Stars and Lightning jockey for top position in those dealings. As someone who grew up in the Dallas suburbs most his life, I'd be overjoyed to see Karlsson in Victory Green for the better part of the next decade. That being said, Heiskanen as the centerpiece of such a deal is quite the price, so we'll just have to wait and see how it all shakes out.

In HJC news, the Pairs Competition with TODAY'S REVEAL  (which I believe is the last) coming from the team of Friend of the Show, Bpoe, and (hey would you look at that) myself. We spent many weeks running through design ideas and worked late into the night on several occasions, though admittedly BPoe more than myself on that one, so we'd love to hear your thoughts on what we came up with. Be sure to leave your rating on this and all the Pairs Competition entries so a victor canbe declared.

On to the concepts!
Ben S.- 2019 Winter Classic
The Hawks roundel logo looked great in their first WC Classic look and the trend continues here as well, once again looking great against a chest stripe. The #OB treatments are handled really well here, which are always the most complicated part of a chest stripe look or one as busy as Boston here. The Boston jersey I like a lot more than I initially thought I would, although the BOSTON wordmark reminds me a bit too much of the original edge Stars jersey that Dallas had to struggle through for many many years too many. I think both looks would benefit from an event patch on one of the shoulders, though I understand not wanting to sink that much effort into a one-off concept. Another touch-up I'd make is to add a thicker brown stripe atop the top white stripe on the socks to match the hem rather than leaving a slight inconsistency.

Overall Rating: 8.0/10
For two teams that have pumped out so many fauxback looks in recent history that it's hard to come up with something new and have it look good. Fortunately, Ben does just that for us today.

FC Macbeth.- Scotland
FC Macbeth continues our Thursday with a very patriotic look for the Scots. The Scottish cross on the gloves and yoke look great as well as the coat of arms on the sleeves. The traditional yoke and hem work really well here as well as the simple striping on the socks and pants. Although, I would've added the thin white stripe from the hem and yoke to both the socks and pants to push that consistency. The only thing that take this concepts too far is the chest cross. The extra color doesn't really achieve that sublimation effect you were going for and there's already enough crosses on the look to set the tone. Another thing (which is more of a concept idea than a criticism) is that this could very easily be adapted as a Florida Panthers look with the Scottish cross subbed out for the red X of the Florida flag and the Panthers already adopting the arm patch and shoulder numbers look.

High marks for the Highlanders here

Jay FS.- Reading Royals
Purple. Yes. I'm sold.

Purple is criminally absent from the NHL color pallete and frankly needs to be readopted by the Kings yesterday. But until that day becomes a reality, we'll have to settle for it in the ECHL here. Jay continues to kill it with this series with a simple but effective look on the primary and a truly unique alternate. The pattern on the alternate is somewhat reminiscent of the Senators 100 Classic look and the gem hem is fantastic for an ECHL team. I really enjoy the promotion of silver on the alt with Black, White, and Purple dominating the primary.
Overall Rating: 9.5/10
Jay keeps us going on this Thursday with another beauty of a look for the minor minor league of the NHL.

Lucas D.- LA HC...?
Not gonna lie, this is along the lines of what I expected from the Golden Knights when they released their logo two Novembers ago. Nice and simple, minimal white on the home and vegas gold shielded by black on the road. This a very effective minimalist looks that can work for any team including LA FC. The LA FC crest works really well on a hockey jersey which should be a lesson for the Rangers should they look to add an alternate in the near future. While I think it's worthwhile to include white in the numbers of the home to connect it better to the road, I'd be interested to see what it'd look like with solely gold numbers to fully complete a white-less look.
Overall Rating: 9.0/10
From Soccer too Hockey, a Barry Sanders-esque look that performs well in both sports

That's all for today folks.

Jay takes home this week's COTW NOMINATION for his READING ROYALS CONCEPT.

We'll see you all next week!
